Day 14: Shanghai

Shanghai is a "young city" in China which means it is "only" 700 years old.  In the 1930's it was considered the Paris of Asia.  If you want to read a good novel that takes place in Shanghai I recommend Shanghai Girls. I read it right before I left.

In Shanghai it costs $10,000 for a license plate in order to keep the roads from being overcrowded.  It was hard to tell because it still felt like there were millions of cars everywhere we went.

View of Shanghai from our hotel room.
We went to the Shanghai Art Museum and then went for a brief look at the Pudong area of Shanghai which is brand new.  Everything has been built since the 1990's.  They even have an urban planning museum because of how spectacular the growth has been.
A model of Shanghai.  The new buildings are on the far side of this river.

Famous hotel in Shanghai.

Across the river is the Pudong area.  Only 20 years ago it was all farmland.

We ended the day with a farewell dinner, because we left early the next morning for our long 24 hours of traveling back to St. Louis.
