Day 8: Pingyao to Xi'an

KFC in the airport.
After driving back to Taiyuan we flew to Xi'an.  Xi'an was the capital of China under Emperor Qín Shǐ Huáng (sometimes seen as Cheng the 1st emperor).  The city is surrounded by ancient tombs.  1/3 of the taxes went to building them! Our guide told us the policy in China is preservation first, excavation second so most of these tombs have not been excavated.

Between 600-800AD Xi'an was the biggest city in the world with 1 million people.  It was located at the end of the Silk Road.  Today Xi'an is a "medium sized" city in China which means it has about 8 million people.

The bell tower in the old part of the city.

A Mcdonald's right across from the bell tower.

Lots of traffic

Our guide told us that Xi'an is like the root of China, while Beijing is the trunk and Shanghai is like the flowering branches.
